Kader Keita struck a late equaliser to earn Galatasaray a barely-deserved draw against Atletico Madrid and put the Turkish side in pole position to progress through to the last 16 of the Europa League.
Atletico, in buoyant mood after last week reaching the Copa del Rey final and on Sunday becoming the first team to beat Barcelona in La Liga this season, took a 22nd-minute lead through Jose Antonio Reyes’ brilliant free-kick.
The Rojiblancos then created a host of good chances but were denied mainly by their former goalkeeper Leo Franco in the Galatasaray net, as well as the woodwork on one occasion.
And the home side’s inability to build a bigger lead could end up costing them dear after Galatasaray stunned their hosts by claiming a potentially crucial away goal 13 minutes from time through Keita.
